I need to replace my 80GB PVR with 160GB.

I currently have a Digihome which I bought from Argos and
despite it not having the badge Humax or Topfield on the front
I have been very happy with it.

But Argos have stopped selling the 160GB version.

Is the Wharfedale, which they do sell in 160 (and 250)
versions another one of the Vestel clones or is it completely
different? The front panel looks the same and the rest of
the spec matches, but that isn't conclusive.

TIA

Hi Tim,

It's a Vestel T816 clone. There's a discussion about the 250GB version here:

I think I'm going to try and get one of those myself! I've been trying to
get one of those Onn 160GB T816's at my local Asda, but I'm ready to give up
because they can't be arsed getting new stock in...

In fact, they don't seem to be arsed with doing anything these days...

Do you feel confident to take the lid off your existing box ?

If so, I would google around for whether swapping the hard drive for another
will increase the capacity instantly. For many machines this is the case.
So, just buying the appropriate size of computer hard drive gives an instant
upgrade.

Many PVRs use the smaller 2.5in laptop size drives.

Would that not depend on where the unit operating system is installed?

It must be stored in flash, as the disk is turned off
unless you are recording/playing back. You can hear
the disk start up when you start one of these operations
(and there is a noticable delay if you do so after waiting
for the disk to stop).

I still wouldn't like to change it though :-(

That doesn't prove that *all* the software is in flash or ROM - it could
bootstrap some of it from disk like a PC.

However, the Humax just uses flash and you can swap the HD and it
automatically reformats it for use.

I suspect most PVRs do this as they are based on Freeview boxes without HD.
