Discussion:
alteration to Tyne Tess and YTV coverage

On Calendar tonight they welcomed the new viewers thay had gained from Tyne
Tees 'as the result of digital mapping'. Presumably this refers to DSAT,
meaning that DSAT viewers in Thirsk and Harrogate will get YTV whilst
terrestrial viewers in the same area are likely to see Tyne Tees from
Bilsdale. Is my supposition correct?

I'll let you know at the weekend when I'm next in Harrogate. Normally I
get YTV on Freeview and whatever I chose on my FTA DSAT box. I hope that
they haven't b*ggered-up my Freeview service - it's poor as it is.

I think so, a number of N Yorks punters have received a post card from
Sky this last week informing them that their ITV 1 region was changing,
and Sky+ users would need to reset any ITV 1 recordings.

The same is also happening in the Gloucester and Cheltenham area, this
week their post code mapping has moved from Meridian (as a legacy of the
old defunct Central South region) to HTV West.

About time too! There's plenty of Oxfordshire viewers upset enough at
receiving Meridian without the ridiculous situation of Gloucs viewers
receiving it too.

Well I haven't received such a card, but if there has been a
mapping change then it's about time.

The problem is that post DSO those people in northern Harrogate
(i.e. behind the hill) will still have to put up with TTTV on
Freeview when most of the town - on Freeview from Emley or on
sat - will be watching (the majority preferred) YTV.

I wouldn't have thought it was too difficult to radiate a highly
directional signal from Bilsdale towards Harrogate (and parts of
north Leeds/Wetherby area for that matter) carrying YTV. Oh, I
forgot, ITV has got no money......

This ITV1 mapping is a load of bullshit. The viewer should be able to
choose which region of ITV1 they want to watch and assign it to 103
themselves. Pity the crappy sky digibox is not flexible enough to do this.
Maybe its related to advertising etc, but I never watch any adverts anymore.
Fast forward right past them, so the advertisers are wasting their money!!!!
I have long since refused to watch bloody adverts on commercial crap
channels.

It's nothing to do with the Sky Digibox! ITV want people to watch the correct
adverts and they pay Sky (lots!) of money to set 103 to the region that ITV
wish to have.

Brian, try reading my post fully before responding.
I did actually say it was advert related, but I was right to say that the
Sky DodgyBox is crap and is not able to user assign 103 or any other channel
for that matter.

The fact that it can't do those things is the result of a deliberate
policy. You seemed to be implying it was down to poor design, a careless
omission; a lack of understanding of what functionality the viewers might
want.

Actually Sky understand exactly what the viewers want and go out of their
way not to provide it - such as the continuing lack of "switch to/from
last channel viewed" on the basic Digibox, the single most egregiously
missing feature, still not added well over a decade later. They also
understand what they and the broadcasters want, and that's a nicely locked
down platform where you can't re-order or re-number channels.

Look at it from whatever angle you like. I look at things and make a
decision as to whether they are any good for me. If Sky want to lock down
the system, thats fine. I don't however have to use the system and neither
does anyone else if they choose not to. There are many flexible alternatives
if people go out and buy them. You are quite correct in your response and
that is exactly why I have dumped Sky and their crappy (as far as I am
concerned) system. From Skys perspective, its good to be control freaks,
from my perspective its a poorly designed system that offers no flexibity
(maybe on purpose) and I prefer a more flexible system where I can decide
which channels go where. I suppose its a good enough reason for not having
a Sky Digibox anymore.

You have missed one salient point. People who contribute to this
NG know what (TV technical) life is about but overlook the fact
that most Sky users are essentially simple souls. Given the
number of such souls it makes good sense for Sky to have a
relatively simple system that is the same wherever it operates
and that is installed to the same standard (!!) and in the same
style thus making life easier for their support people.

It would be interesting to see, when given the option of Freesat
from Sky or (Freeview-type) Freesat how many opt for the former.
At least you get 24/7 free support from Sky - where to you go
when you have a problem with your Humax or Grundig Freesat box at
23:30 on Christmas Eve?

I'd go to bed and stop worrying about it.
