Is it just me being a killjoy, but does anyone else think that the ESC
has grown too big, if it needs to have heats and semi-finals, rather
than just including everyone in a single contest? By rights, the
highest-scoring runner up should have been invited to compete in the
final, once the Netherlands had been disqualified (for whatever offence
the singer committed at the rehearsal).

Was Israel part of the ESC right from the start? What about the former
countries in Eastern Europe, such as Czechoslovakia - were they included
from the outset even if they are now "included" by the modern countries
that occupy the same territory?

Is it even about songs any more? Or just expressing weird sexualities,
hatred for who is at war with someone else, ancient loyalties between
countries, and making sure somebody has to get "nul points" at some
stage in the evening?

When it started, it was only 7 countries ...
Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and Italy

It's been in the ESC at least since the '70s or '80s, when I remember a
catchy number sung by Esther and Abi Ofarim having huge success.
Nowadays even Australia seems to be "in Europe".

When it started, wasn't it devised as a way to use the EBU network that
was used for a short time every day for news exchanges and occasional
major events. It was in place so presumably no cost or little cost.

I doubt whether it reached as far Israel, it would be very expensive in
the pre-satellite days. Few news events happened down there anyway!

I suppose "EBU Member Song Contest" would have been a rather clumsy
title though might stopped the EU think it was something to do with them.

The only other EBU event I can recall watching is the New Years Day
concerts from Vienna....

There were more than that, the daily news exchange, the old chap in
Rome's speech at Easter and I am sure others. It is quite routine now
to send something by satellite.

Was JSF ever broadcast live - ie using the Eurovision network? I
presumed it was recorded locally in a scanner van in whichever country
the game was taking place, and then the tape was broadcast by the
various member countries at a time to suit their schedule. Maybe the
Eurovision network was used to distribute copies of the edited
programme, as opposed to physically shipping videotapes.

I'm pretty certain that it came live over the Eurovision link, but it was
over 50 years ago and mmeory can play tricks.

There certainly was football live, though.
