I am planning to buy the iPad Mini 7th generation once it is
eventually released. I may have an offer of headphones in advance
(birthday!).
1. I understand all new devices are fitted with a USB-C port. Will
this be the means to power the heaphones?
2. Should I be looking for USB-C headphones (which seem to be few and
far between) or is an adapter just as good?

an adaptor could be useful if you want to charge the iPad as the same time.
I have one for my iPhone. On the other hand, you could use Bluetooth
headphones. (iPods)

bluetooth ones would be a whole lot more convenient.

How does the audio quality compare? Does running bluetooth affect the
iPad's battery life?

Bluetooth uses trivial amounts of power. The critical bit is how long the
earphones go between charges, rather than the iPad. Audio quality is
entirely dependent on the construction of the ear/headphones. Either via
Bluetooth or USB it is the same digit stream. Obviously, also depends on
how well your hearing has withstood the ageing process. Corded earphones
are harder to lose.

Hint: always buy a good brand of earphones or headphones. Sennheiser
generally take some beating.

By happy coincidence it is Sennheiser I am looking at.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Bluetooth had its own set of
codecs... hang on ... searches ... ah yes. There are a set. Now exactly
which ones your ear(bud|phone)s supports is variable. That does include
some common ones, and at least one manufacturer is doing a lossless codec.

But if you're playing something over the internet it will have a
compressed audio format. If that isn't a codec that your ear-things
support the iPad will have to transcode it. Which eats power and can
affect quality.

And is _not_ the same digit stream.

Thanks. This confirms my intuition (certainly not supported by any
proper understanding).

Now there seems to be a rumour relating to 9 September for release.
How can there be so much mystery? These devices must be manufactured
weeks or months in advance to allow shipping and distribution. Surely
a call to a 'source' in the factory is all that any self-respecting
journalist would need (maybe not for a precise date).

Part of the contract with the factory will be to keep new products
secret. They could be sued if they don't - and perhaps more to the point
they would never get another contract.

Is this not a situation familiar to investigative journalists :-)
