Problem with streaming

Sorry this is a bit long.

I noticed a week or so ago that a whole swathe of new channels have
appeared between 251 and 299 on Freeview. We have a Samsung smart TV
that uses wi-fi to access these channels (thus streaming) without problem.

I did a retune of a Philips 24" HD TV in the kitchen which then showed
these streaming channels in the guide. The TV has an Ethernet socket and
the ability for network connection in the setup menus. I have a TP-Link
plug-in that can do several functions including acting as a sort of
access point - in this case picking streaming up from my wi-fi and
presenting it to the TV network connection.

The problem: it works perfectly on ch 266 (France24) but if I put it on
294 (Talk) after a short delay I get text warning that the connection
can take up to 30sec to establish, and there it sits, nothing else happens.
It did work (intermittently) when I first used the other half of the
double main socket into which the TV is plugged for the access unit, but
now it just gets to the text screen and stops.

Any ideas anyone? The TP-L unit is only about 10ft from a live access
point on the floor above so will be getting a good signal. The oddity is
that the TV tells me that the network is connected but I cannot access
it from my desktop at the other end. It doesn't show up on the
connections of the main router. Supplier is VM with the Superhub2
running as a modem only. No other issues elsewhere.

Could it be that the various streaming channels use different encoding
methods and that the Philips TV doesn’t cater for them all?

So effectively it's replacing a length of cable, like this?

Router <=Cable=> AP <-WiFi-> TP-L <=Cable=> TV

I suspect nomenclature may vary, but in the documents that I've seen
from DD-WRT an AP being used like your TP-L is called a client or
client-bridge - a client AP allows other devices to connect back to a
source AP via either wired or wireless connection to itself, whereas a
client-bridge only allows wired connections to itself and refuses WiFi
clients.

Likewise, I have here a Cisco WRT320N with a DD-WRT build configured as
a client-bridge to connect my bedroom to the rest of my LAN, because
taking a cable to it would involve going through asbestos.

Could you not try temporarily either connecting the TV directly to the
router via a long cable or else moving it close enough to use a shorter
one? That would either point the finger at or remove all blame from the
wireless section, which would at least move the problem forward.

Tnx Charles, but a bit the other way around. It goes:-
Router>wireless (Wi-fi) AP>cable to TV.
When I first had it running it worked with Talk (as in TalkTV) on 294
but was a bit intermittent, whereas with France24 on 266 it came up much
more easily and rock solid. The only difference between then and now is
that I have swapped the TV and AP in the two positions of a standard
double socket as the AP was partially blocking the PIR/uW alarm sensor.
I have tried doing a factory reset on the AP but to no joy - I cannot
even talk to it through the network now!

Anyway I'm backing off for a bit now as I won a pair of powerline units
on eBay earlier today and I know they will work. I have a pair already
but I have misplaced one of them!!!
